Florida's Stupid

Woman dies in her own filth

According to an Associated Press article, police found a Jacksonville woman dead in her home Wednesday. But finding her wasn’t very easy since her body was buried under 8 feet of garbage.

Family members of Carine E. Decampo, 71, tipped them off after they called the station saying that hadn’t heard from her in several weeks.

My question is why didn’t neighbors call the police. I’m guessing the stench coming from Decampo’s home was taking over the neighborhood. Seriously, if the house wasn’t already stinky enough because of the 8 feet of garbage rotting in it, then a several-week-old dead body was probably too much to handle.

Officers became so ill from the house’s smelly state they had to borrow firefighter’s breathing gear. After two unsuccessful days of looking for Decampo, police brought in cadaver dogs to help with the search.

Officials are conducting an autopsy to see what caused her death.

Decampo was clearly unable to take care of herself and her home. I don’t understand why it took her family members several weeks to call the police. What I really don’t understand is how these same family members let her live in such filth. A house filled with 8 feet of garbage doesn’t just happen over night.
