Florida's Stupid

Be a buddy, not a bully

Who says City Council meetings are boring? Because they certainly aren’t in St. Petersburg, Fla.

I’ll just say this now — when looking for stories to blog about, a 76-year-old man throwing a punch will always get my attention. And after I watched the video footage of the brawl, I have to say that I’m impressed.

An Associated Press article reported Friday that the meeting turned nasty when two men started arguing over a sidewalk. That’s right, a sidewalk. Two grown men got into a fight over a sidewalk.

It all started when council members decided to give a local business the part of the sidewalk in front of the building. This decision was made after weeks of debate. Business owners said it would help the complex since it would get rid of demonstrators. However, free speech activists believe it hinders the community’s ability to practice the First Amendment.

It wasn’t until the vote was over that the meeting turned into a real-life version of the Rocky’s fight against Apollo Creed.

I’m all for being involved in local government, but this is just ridiculous.

I'm a fourth year journalism student and have absolutely no idea what I want to do after graduation. I have unhealthy obsessions with celebrity gossip and "Harry Potter." I hate "Twilight" and anything to do with vampires. I'm currently the University Desk editor at the Independent Florida Alligator where I have the pleasure of dealing with Student Government, campus events and UF administration.
